People, animals, machines, kaleidoscopically re-
converge as characters. Children and adults
respond to changelings and mutants, mythic even
grotesque figures of constant change. Computers
are personified as wise guides, especially for the
young. A benevolent computer allies itself with a
group of teens to solve mysteries or problems in
the television series GhostWriter . This computer
has no voice. To get the clues, the kids must read
the words on the screen. Visual space is more
resilient than McLuhan foresaw, but he was also
right: under electronic conditions spatial
experience is transformed. Starting young.
Generation by generation.
